Bayonetta and The Case for Gameplay vs. Aesthetic

As far as looks go, very few games manage to raise as many questions as the Platinum Games' Bayonetta series. A little over a week ago, when Bayonetta 2 was released, we saw many of the same arguments against it that we did the first time around; over-sexualization and vying for the male gaze being some of the… » 11/03/14 11:28pm 11/03/14 11:28pm

On Depression and Dark Souls

On a foggy October morning in 2011, I bought From Software's aggressive and punishing action RPG Dark Souls. I skipped class that morning, having not slept for over 48 hours, but at the time that was the norm for me. The highlight of my life was this game, which when you put in to perspective of being 19 and attending… » 10/09/14 1:00am 10/09/14 1:00am

We Are All Smash Brothers

This memory has stuck with me quite well. It was the spring of 1999, and I'm sitting on the couch watching cartoons after school. That day I saw something spectacular. I saw the commercial for Super Smash Bros., you know, the one with the people dressed up as Mario, Donkey Kong, and Yoshi smacking each other around?… » 6/05/14 11:20pm 6/05/14 11:20pm

Some Thoughts on Transistor

As many have expected, Supergiant Games' Transistor, their second game after their fantastic Bastion, is equally as wonderful. The game brings all of the passion and class that its predecessor had, and then some. Having just finished my second playthrough, I still can't get this game out of my head. It really is a… » 5/30/14 12:56am 5/30/14 12:56am

My Experiences with Titillating Games

The representation of sex in video games is the source of some of the most heated debates in the history of the medium. With opinions and situations ranging from ridiculous to downright humiliating, it is easy to see why some developers would receive negative attention from using sex appeal in their games. What I… » 5/22/14 10:44pm 5/22/14 10:44pm

On Charities and Video Games

"I'll tell you what, run a marathon or something and I'll donate to that." my coworker said. "Anyone can play video games. You play them all the time, what kind of charity is that?" I rebutted that not only have I done charity runs before, but the cause it's for is great. "Yeah well, I don't see a point in pledging if… » 5/14/14 7:56pm 5/14/14 7:56pm

The Importance of Low Budget Games

As technology moves further along, we see video games move along with it. Massive, sprawling worlds with fantastic graphics and encompassing gameplay are signs that gaming isn't just moving along technologically, but rather they are becoming more expensive to make. Even though the fantastic set pieces and battles in … » 4/11/14 3:27am 4/11/14 3:27am

I'd say you'd get a more wholesome experience from 4. More classes, more dungeons. That said, if you're unsure this is a franchise you might not play more of, go with MG. It's a tad easier and still has some cool new innovations of its own. For a traditional EO experience in that case, I'd recommend playing on Classic. » 3/28/14 12:08am 3/28/14 12:08am

The Thrill of Fighting Games

Like many others, I have great memories of spending afternoons and quarters in the arcade. Back home, the arcade was this pretty dark room attached to the bowling alley. Far from spectacular, but it was special in its own way. There were a lot of games my friends and I would play, but one in particular we kept coming… » 3/27/14 9:51pm 3/27/14 9:51pm
